CINEMATOGRAPHER

Blog

Welcome

Hello all, and welcome to my blog.

In short, this blog is an excuse for me to share things I find interesting. I’ll be sharing tests, reviews, comparisons, etc. There really is no end to the topics this blog could cover, and that is why I think it is exciting.

A little about me. I was born in Wichita, Kansas and grew up in various cities in Mississippi. I moved to Cincinnati, Ohio just before high school. There, I met some of my best friends, and with a collective interest in writing, filmmaking, and comedy, we took to creating shorts on YouTube. My friends and I weren’t troublemakers per se, but we shared a sensibility for edgy comedy, so some of our videos got us in trouble. Anyway, I tended to be the director for the shorts since I had the most technical knowledge in terms of the camera and editing. This is when I was using Final Cut X. Eventually, we all graduated and I pursued film school.

Film school is where I learned I do not want to be a director. It’s one thing to make low key videos with your friends. It’s another thing to make a film with the upmost responsibility of an entire crew. It is not that I do not enjoy collaborating. It’s just, to me, to be a director, you have to be keeping an eye on so many different aspects in order for your film to be what you intended it to be. I absolutely respect different director’s ability to do that. I just prefer to be more singular in focus. That is where I found cinematography.

I enjoy how limited, yet vast, cinematography is. It is equal parts challenging and rewarding. There is so much to learn, yet it has fundamentals that have persisted throughout film history. Understanding this and experimenting on each project has been a great joy for me.

I am now fixing to graduate film school and enter the workforce. For future readers, we are currently in the middle of the Coronavirus pandemic. So, finding work will be an interesting challenge.

Thanks for reading and stay tuned.
